This is a trade half for Solstice, of a demon guy she's been daydreaming of lately. I tried a more scribbly style and it actually looks pretty cool to me. <_<

Forest Jump

Quickfire animated .gif sketch of strop doing his ninja thing in a forest.

It's hardly perfect but it was fun and good practice. I might do a few more of these or something and might do a casual b&w flash animation sometime. Just something pokey and light-hearted.

Strop character sheet

This is the official version of Strop, as he stands right now. Ever since last year I've gained the online reputation as a ninja pony, and so I've grown into that and will no longer use my real life nickname online.

The dimensions are now genuinely mine, as opposed to being exaggerated as in the past. Strop seems to be the ninja name, but in some capacity this character is still Morgan, and has retained his archery (despite the fact I'm not an archer myself). I just like the notion of stillness.

In other words, if anybody ever wants to draw strop, this is the basic template. Strop does not wear fancy stuff and tends to be quite minimalist, so will not carry a whole range of equipment, and sometimes carries nothing at all. Final note: I'll put in holes for the ears: works better.

Strop of the Night

One of the early sketches of revamped Strop. Because he was skulking around, I made it a night-time sketch.

The anatomy is horrid- the thighs are way too long because I moved things around improperly between sketching and coloring. Also the costume was far from finalised- I removed the armbands and the kunai pouch (which you can't see anyway). Also this strop's arms are too big.

But the lighting is kinda funky and I was still not used to the tablet by this stage so here you go.

I think the pixellated edges are wholly my fault this time.

Lineart is still developing. My major focus is now integrating the frames with the content as this is something I really want to do- I tend not to like it when there's a visual disparity, as I consider frames to be an essential part of the sequential medium.

Also resisted the temptation to use romanji etc. for sound effects. I don't like using English for noise (not as lame as some French FX haha), so I thought why not depict it with symbols instead? That's my innovation for the day. It's not enough for me to appropriate manga influences without altering them meaningfully.

There's a smudge at the top of the page. Please ignore. I'm not going back to fix it.

Strugglers pilot page 1

This is a draft, for the purposes of working out stylistic issues for how I want to present Strugglers. I've actually started at a really bad spot: the ultimate climax of the protagonist's story arc.

I didn't like the way this page turned out because the linework was too messy and I'm not good with that. Also the coloring was just...it felt disjointed from the linework. At this stage I was strongly emphasising lighting effect.

Still not sold on the linework. Coloring was better, and I'm getting a feel for frames as well. Not a whole lot to say about that.

As for the story, Nes is going to the ultimate breakdance battle of his life against the world champion (don't you love these shonen-like plots), and he is absolutely terrified. His latter statement about dying, strangely enough, is not actually exaggerated because he does have very sordid past which included frequent close-encounters with death.

By this page I was actually rather sick of the sloppy linework and started playing around with the settings on the pen.

Introducing another character, of whom I have yet to generate a proper profile. He is referred to in my script as HD (Hound Dog), and he is Neske's manager. I intend to make him a bit of a foil, as he can come across as a bit of a bullshit-artist and a fool. His catchphrase is "I can spot talent with my eyes shut."

Popular culture references include Big Smoke from GTA San Andreas, Sam and Max, a fat version of one depiction of Snoop Dogg and just about any archetypal reference to the large African-American gangsta figure.
